Library Mosaics and the Council on Library/Media Technicians are proud to announce the winners of
the 2002 Support Staff and Supporter of Support Staff Awards.

2002 OUTSTANDING SUPPORT STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD

Cynthia Mielke

The recipient of Library Mosaics' and the Council on Library/Media Technician's 2002 award for Outstanding Support Staff is Cynthia Mielke, a library associate from the Hilton Briggs Library, at South Dakota State University. The award is presented annually for noteworthy service by a library support staff member.

Ms. Mielke has made significant contributions to the continuing growth and development of library support staff around the country through active involvement on the local, state and national levels. She has served for the past two years as the chair of the South Dakota Library Association Support Staff Section (SDLA SSS). In this position she has represented the state's paraprofessional on the South Dakota Library Association executive committee. Mary Kraljic, Cindy's supervisor, stated "Cindy was one of the founding members of the South Dakota Library Association's Support Staff Section. She has done a tremendous job of recruiting members for the section and ensuring the sections visibility in library newsletters, at SDLA meetings, state conferences, and other statewide library events. She has participated in SDLA Legislative Day, has organized and promoted support staff workshops at state conferences, and was instrumental in developing a regional staff conference to be hel! d in South Dakota this spring."

Additionally, Ms. Mielke organized and served three years a chair of the Brookings Support Staff Annual Library Assistant's Day celebration event. She was also responsible for the holding of the Annual Library Assistants Day in Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota. She is a regular contributor to the SDLA publication, BookMarks and Library Mosaics magazine. In October 2000, due to Cynthia's efforts, an annual Support Staff of the Year award was created for South Dakota support staff.

For her efforts in promoting and organizing support staff, she has been presented with the 2002 Support Staff Award. Cynthia Mielke will be featured in the May/June issue of Library Mosaics and will be recognized at the annual banquet of the Council on Library/Media Technicians conference in Atlanta, Georgia, June 14, 2002. She will also receive a cash prize and a plaque describing her achievements.



2002 OUTSTANDING SUPPORTER OF SUPPORT STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD

Billie M. Connor-Dominguez

The recipient of Library Mosaics' and the Council on Library/Media Technicians' 2002 award for Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff is Billie M. Connor-Dominguez, manager of Los Angeles Public Library's (LAPL) Business and Economic and Science, Technology and Patents departments. The award is presented annually for outstanding service to library support staff.

Ms. Connor-Dominguez was selected for her dedicate work on behalf of support staff. David Tulanian, now a children's librarian at LAPL, wrote about the importance of Ms. Connor-Dominguez in his life as a support staff member. He was aware of her dedication to her staff and he observed countless examples of her special relationships with her staff. She served as a mentor and encouraged him and other support staff to pursue their academic dreams and goals. She always took the time to counsel him and other support staff and extended invitations to (and paid for) meetings, conferences and luncheons.

For many hears, Ms. Connor-Dominguez has encouraged support staff to become involved in the library profession. She has assisted many of her staff in academic opportunities for them to participate in relevant workshops, conferences and other programs. Due to Ms. Connor-Dominguez's encouragement and mentoring, a member of her staff was the first support staff employee in the nation to receive the U.S. Patent and Trademark Depository Library Fellowship.

Ms. Connor-Dominguez was the first recipient of the Billie Connor Award for her "Continuous and Outstanding Service" to the Southern California Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. This award was created in recognition of her tireless work for the Association, in which she served as president.
