2004 OUTSTANDING SUPPORTER OF SUPPORT STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD

Kent Slade

The winner of Library Mosaics' and the Council on Library/Media Technician's 2004 award for Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff is KENT SLADE, Electronic Services Librarian at the Logan Library, Logan Utah. The award is presented annually for outstanding service to library support staff.

Mr. Slade was selected for his dedicated work on behalf of support staff. Since early in his career, his interest in library work, and in the advancement of library workers, has been evidenced by his consistent and continued involvement in a wide range of organizations serving both librarians and support staff.

Kent's involvement with the Library Assistance Round Table, Utah Library Association, ranged from membership on the Round Table's certification committee to chairing the Round Table. He was vice-chair of the New Members Round Table of the Mountain Plains Library Association, an organization representing librarians and library workers in twelve states, and was elected chair of the association in 1993.

He has worked with the American Library Association's Library Support Staff Interests Round Table (LSSIRT), serving as Steering Committee member and on the board as member-at-large. He served as a delegate to the ALA Congress on Professional Education: Focus on Support Staff (COPE III).

Kent is currently chair of Utah Library Association's Library Paraprofessional and Support Staff Round Table (LPSSRT). In his role as chair, he is continuing to support the Utah Certificate of Achievement for support staff, proposing to the Utah Library Association a mini-Congress, similar to COPE III, to consider a state-level course of action. The Utah Library Association approved the proposal and agreed to give it financial support.

Additionally, Kent is a contributor to Library Mosaics magazine and member of the writing staff of Associates: The Electronic Library Support Staff Journal.

For his efforts in supporting and encouraging support staff, he has been presented with the 2004 Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff award.
