Library Mosaics and the Council on Library/Media Technicians are proud to announce the winners of
the 1995 Support Staff and Supporter of Support Staff Awards.

1995 OUTSTANDING SUPPORT STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD

Ruth Tolbert

Ruth Tolbert is the recipient of the Library Mosaics/COLT 1995 Outstanding Support Staff of the Year Award. Ruth is an Administrative Assistant for the Central Indiana Area Library Authority (CIALSA).

The award honors a support staff for outstanding achievement and service to the field of Librarianship. Ruth Tolbert is honored for her valuable contributions to CIALSA, her work in reviving the Indiana Library Federation Support Staff Division and her activities with the Council on Library/Media Technicians (COLT).

Ruth is a valuable member of CIALSA. She maintains the conference database, instructs and supports chairpersons of various committees, and coordinates workshops. She also maintains support staff resource files, writes the Support Report newsletter, co-edits CIALSA’s newsletter and maintains the online Indiana Jobline.

Mrs. Tolbert works tirelessly in support of library support staff within her state and nationwide. She was instrumental in reviving the Indiana Library Federation Support Staff Division and is an active member of the Council on Library Media Technicians, serving as Membership Committee Chairperson. In 1994, Ms. Tolbert received the COLT Service Award for her outstanding contribution to the organization.

In addition to her professional activities, Ms Tolbert is active in her community. She develops workshops for her local branch public library, coordinates book drives for her church library and works on a variety of projects to assist the poor of her community.

Ruth Tolbert will be featured in the May/June 1995 issue of Library Mosaics and will be recognized during COLT's Banquet, held in conjunction with the 1995 COLT Annual Conference. She will receive a cash prize and a plaque describing the achievement for which he was selected.



1995 OUTSTANDING SUPPORTER OF SUPPORT STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD

Arolana ("Lana") M. Meissner

The Library Mosaics/COLT 1995 Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff is Arolana ("Lana") M. Meissner, University Librarian, at Alfred University’s (New York) Herrick Memorial Library. She was nominated by the entire staff of her library.

Ms. Meissner is recognized for her dedication to the professional development of the staff of the Herrick Memorial Library both in their work in personal and professional growth endeavors.

In a time of growing technological demands on the library staff by the implementation library automation, Ms. Meissner sought special grants to fund training for her staff. As part of a library reorganization process all library staff were included in the planning process, and encouraged and facilitated to be members of committees and task forces.

Mrs. Meissner encourges all of her staff to participate in personal development and advancement activities. She conducts annual staff retreats, and supports staff participation in the New York State Library Assistants’ Association (NYSSLA). When staff members were tapped to conduct a workshop at the NYSLAA conference Ms. Meissner encouraged all interested support staff to attend the conference to support their colleagues. She provided funding and release-time for tem to do so and ensured coverage of their positions while they were away. She herself filled at the circulation desk. The workshop presenters were surprised with a "speakers" care package made up of individual small presents, candy and a celebratory bottle of champagne. She continues to encourage staff participation in professional growth activities.

Ms. Meissner will be featured in the May /June 1995 issue of Library Mosaics and will be recognized during COLT's Banquet, held in conjunction with the 1995 COLT Annual Conference. She will receive a cash prize and a plaque describing the achievement for which she was selected.
