1997 OUTSTANDING SUPPORTER OF SUPPORT STAFF OF THE YEAR AWARD
The winner of the Library Mosaics and the Council on Library/Media Technicians 1997 award for Supporter of Support Staff is Dr. Dale Montgomery, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology, University of Wisconsin -La Crosse, WI.
The award honors a Supporter of Support Staff for outstanding service to library support staff.
Dr. Montgomery was selected for his local and state-wide efforts and commitment to the growth and development of support staff.
One of the most notable efforts Dr. Montgomery performed was the initiative he took in 1994, when he opposed a proposed plan by the state Department of Employment Relations to reclassify and compress Library Services Assistant job classifications. He brought the impact of this plan to the attention of the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries and to human resources offices statewide. He convened a subcommittee on the reclassification proposal which positively impacted the language and classification levels of the final document.
Dr. Montgomery encouraged enrichment and development activities for staff and faculty at the Murphy Library Resource Center at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, providing funding and release time to participate in training and other activities. He also sought classified staff participation on various committees both on campus and off, like the Library Endowment Fund committee and the Support Staff Section of the Wisconsin Library Association.
In 1996, Dr. Montgomery was awarded the Muriel Fuller Award by the Wisconsin Library Association. The award is conferred upon a library professional or paraprofessional in recognition of outstanding accomplishments which have significantly improved and benefitted library services. For his outstanding efforts in supporting and encouraging support staff, we present Dr. Montgomery with the 1997 Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff Award.
Dr. Montgomery will be featured in the May/June issue of Library Mosaics and will also recognized during COLT's Banquet, held in conjunction with the 1997 COLT Annual Conference, San Francisco, CA, June 25-28, 1997. He will receive a cash prize of $100 and a plaque describing the achievement for which he was selected.
