I am writing in support of the request from the Council on Library/Media Technicians, Inc. that April 23, 1998 be declared Library Support Staff Day in California during National Library Week which is April 19-25.

Paraprofessional workers in libraries often form the backbone of library operations. They provide support to the professional and management staff of large libraries and, in many smaller libraries, are responsible for the full operations. Without their invaluable aid, California's school, academic, public and special libraries would suffer.

I know that you have long valued the role of libraries in California, in our communities, our businesses, our schools and our universities. Recognizing the valuable contributions of library support staff would be recognizing an important element of this.
