Library Support Staff Day

April 23, 1998

WHEREAS, April 23, 1998 has been set aside to recognize the outstanding contributions of library assistants, library technicians, and library technical assistants, and on this day, 250 academic, public, private and special libraries will celebrate the accomplishments of library support staff; and

WHEREAS, a library technician is anyone working in a library, other than those who have received an advanced degree in Library or Information Science, and can include Shelvers, Serials Specialists, Acquisition Specialists, Filers, Interlibrary Loan Specialists, Administrative Assistants, Technical Services Specialists, Circulation Specialists or Catalogers; and

WHEREAS, the Council on Library/Media Technicians (COLT) is one of many paraprofessional organizations providing library support staff with opportunities to initiate, promote and support activities leading toward the advancement of knowledge and understanding; and

WHEREAS, library technicians should be recognized for the knowledge and expertise needed to perform their duties and that these are the people behind the scenes who keep the libraries operating on a daily basis.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Joe Serna, Jr., Mayor of the City of Sacramento do hereby proclaim April 23, 1998 as Library Support Staff Day in Sacramento and urge the residents of this city to join me congratulating these wonderful people.
